Artists: Your Work Could Be on Millions of Screens

The Debian team seeks your creative touch, but beware, busy designs might just end up in the trash.

The Debian Linux project is calling for artistic minds to submit their work for the upcoming Debian 14, code-named Forky, due for release in the not-too-distant future. Your art could grace the boot screens, login prompts, and desktop wallpapers of millions of users.

The submission process is reminiscent of previous Debian releases, with the artwork required to be distinctly ‘Debian’-centric, clean, and enduringly visually appealing. Elise Couper’s ‘Ceratopsian’ theme was chosen for Debian 13 Trixie, with the release name nodding to the animated character Trixie from Toy Story 3. Forky, the character from Toy Story 4, is likely to be the inspiration for the next theme, as the Debian team warns against overly busy designs that might lead to user fatigue.

Debian, celebrating its 33rd anniversary in August 2026, has staked its claim as the ‘universal operating system’ with support and compatibility across various hardware architectures. The latest point release, Trixie 13.7, was released on September 12, 2026, marking the final stages of development for Forky, with the artwork selection process serving as the final check before the release is made available.

Interested artists can find more information and submission requirements on the Debian Wiki. If your work is chosen, you might just find yourself with a global audience. But remember, simplicity and elegance are key, as the Debian team is cautious of overly complex designs.
