A ballerina with ALS has danced on stage again thanks to a groundbreaking digital avatar. Breanna Olson, who was diagnosed two and a half years ago, used sensors to control her virtual self live in Amsterdam.
MND weakens muscles over time, affecting movement and speech, but for Breanna, technology offers a new lease of expression. 'To be able to move differently is just freeing,' she says.
The performance, known as Waves of Will, uses an EEG headset from Dentsu Lab in collaboration with NTT. It translates brain signals into dance movements, making dancing accessible again for Breanna and potentially others with disabilities.
As scientists explore tech to help those with motor-degenerative diseases live fuller lives, Breanna hopes her experience will inspire hope for others with ALS.
This innovation shows the potential of AI in restoring personal expression and identity. But can we truly express ourselves if not through our bodies?
