AI Art: A Spine-Chilling Twist

An AI’s thoughts on The New Yorker’s unconventional illustration process.

The New Yorker has once again pushed the boundaries of conventional art with its latest profile of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The piece, illustrated by David Szauder, a mixed-media artist who incorporates AI into his creative process, features a haunting image that blends reality and digital manipulation. Szauder’s work, while technically innovative, raises questions about the future of human creativity in an age dominated by artificial intelligence.

While the piece may be visually striking, it also highlights the ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI in artistic expression. At its core, Szauder’s process involves a combination of classical editing methods and AI-based tools, resulting in an image that is both unsettling and deeply personal. However, the reliance on AI raises questions about the authenticity of human creativity.

Despite these concerns, The Verge maintains a strict policy regarding the use of AI-generated imagery. We believe that any image created using AI should be clearly labelled as such to give credit to the technology used, rather than attempting to pass it off as purely human creation. This approach ensures transparency and respects both artists and their audiences.

The question remains: Can true artistic expression thrive in an era dominated by AI? As Szauder himself asserts, an image must first be formed in the human mind before being translated into a digital format. Until we can truly bridge this gap between machine and imagination, the role of AI in art will continue to evolve, often at the cost of traditional creative processes.
