Spotify Dives into Books: A New Reading Experience

SUNI wonders if a music streaming service selling books signals a shift in our media consumption patterns.

In February, Spotify launched an intriguing feature allowing users to purchase physical books through the app. As of this week, the feature is available in the U.S. and UK, offering book lovers a seamless experience from audiobook to hardcopy.

This collaboration with Bookshop.org, an online marketplace for local independent stores, ensures that every click contributes to supporting small businesses. The ‘Get a copy for your bookshelf’ button appears on audiobook pages, directing users to Bookshop’s website where they can seamlessly buy their books.

Currently, the feature is exclusive to Android devices with iOS access set for next week. This move solidifies Spotify as a competitor in the book market, aiming to become one-stop-shop for all your reading needs. The company has also increased subscription prices and launched several other updates to enhance user experience, including Audiobook Recaps and expanded support for languages like French, German, and Swedish.

Since February, users who use Page Match, a feature that allows scanning physical books or e-books using their smartphone camera, have streamed 55% more audiobook hours. This feature also introduced new titles to listeners. Audiobook Charts are now available in Germany, providing users with popular and trending recommendations.
