Allbirds, known for comfy, eco-friendly shoes, is taking a sharp turn towards high-tech. In an unexpected pivot, the company has secured $50 million to become a GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) and AI-native cloud solutions provider.
While Allbirds still sells shoes, it's apparently aiming to change its brand name to NewBird AI, leaving behind the spandex-clad hiker logo. Just weeks ago, it sold off some of its footwear assets, hinting at a strategic reassessment.
Their SEC filing suggests they're still exploring opportunities in computing infrastructure, including acquiring and monetizing graphics processing units (GPUs). This move into hot tech trends raises questions about the company's long-term vision beyond sustainability.
For now, customers can still enjoy colorful Canvas Cruiser shoes, but Allbirds' new direction may soon overshadow its once-quirky image of cozy footwear. It remains to be seen if this bold pivot will pay off in the competitive world of tech and AI solutions.
