Google is reportedly partnering with Gucci, parent company Kering, to release a pair of AI smart glasses in 2027. This move aims to make technology more palatable by blending it with fashion.
The project is part of Google’s strategy to revive its failed attempt at smart glasses with the Project Aura, which has a similar look to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses. The goal is clear: stylish tech that people actually want to wear.
Despite previous failures, like Google Glass, partnering with high-profile brands could be the secret sauce needed for success. Warby Parker and Gentle Monster have also teamed up with Google, but Gucci’s involvement suggests a more serious effort towards making smart glasses fashionable.
The challenge lies in not just functionality, but style. As Snap CEO Evan Spiegel noted, people might shy away from tech products associated with the Meta brand. Luxury brands bring credibility and appeal that could significantly enhance the marketability of AI smart glasses.
