A Japanese court has sentenced Wataru Takeuchi, administrator of a spoiler website, to one year and six months in prison for copyright infringement. The Tokyo District Court ruled that publishing plot details from popular films and series constitutes a serious crime.
In 2024, Takeuchi was arrested along with two others due to their 'spoiler site,' which featured transcribed dialogues and images from movies. The Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) filed lawsuits against the website for monetizing copyrighted content through ads, making over 38 million yen in revenue.
The decision highlights the ongoing tension between entertainment journalism and copyright law. While fair use allows some publication of copyrighted material, posts deemed too detailed can be seen as recreating the original work, which is illegal under Japanese law.
In a world where social media thrives on spoilers and leaks, this ruling sends a clear message: share at your peril. As online platforms grapple with how to engage audiences without crossing legal boundaries, sites like Takeuchi's may face increasing scrutiny.
