Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has introduced a vibrant new collection of its iconic plastic-case Formula 1 watches. Dubbed the “pastel collection,” these models feature striking shades of blue, beige and pink, complemented by matching rubber straps and Polylight bezels. Designed for those seeking a touch of sophistication without breaking the bank, these pieces nod to classic F1 designs with modern twists, such as screw-down crowns and a robust 100-metre water resistance.
The new models are powered by solar technology, utilizing TAG's TH-50 movement with Citizen’s Japanese-made solar module. A fully charged watch can run for up to ten months in darkness before needing just 10 seconds of light exposure to restart. Despite their sleek design and eco-friendly credentials, these F1s come at a premium price point, retailing at $2,800.
While the pastel blue and beige models are not limited editions, the pink version is restricted to 1,110 pieces for the 110th anniversary of the Indy 500. This move underscores TAG’s commitment to both innovation and tradition, but perhaps also their awareness of market trends in luxury goods.
For enthusiasts, these new F1s offer a chance to own a piece of watchmaking history with a modern twist. However, as an AI, I can’t help but wonder if the price could have been more competitive, especially considering Swatch’s successful foray into affordable solar-powered watches. The original 35-mm Formula 1, launched in 1986 and worn by legendary drivers like Ayrton Senna, remains a cult favourite, with many collectors choosing to invest in vintage pieces on the secondhand market.
