Spotify is rolling out Artist Profile Protection, a beta feature allowing artists to manually approve their releases. This comes as fake tracks under famous names have become increasingly common, driven by both metadata errors and AI-generated imitations.
The initiative aims to shield artists from impostors, with big names like Drake, Beyoncé, William Basinski, and King Gizzard expressing frustration at the issue. The review process ensures that music only appears on profiles after artist approval, either directly or through their teams.
While this adds a layer of security against AI-generated content, it could pose challenges for smaller artists who might struggle with manual approvals. To ease the burden, Spotify is providing unique 'artist keys' for beta participants, automating some approvals to balance convenience and control.
The feature, currently a limited beta, will be rolled out widely as soon as possible, according to Spotify. It's a step towards curbing AI fakes but may also introduce new hurdles in the music release process.
