Launched in 2021, X's Communities aimed to foster connections among users with shared interests. However, the feature is now being axed due to its overwhelming role as a spam hub and its minimal user engagement.
The head of product at X, Nikitia Bier, revealed that less than 0.4% of users were actively involved in these Communities, yet they accounted for 80% of reported spam, financial scams, and malware incidents on the platform. The majority of successful Communities acted as channels to promote other creators or brands, often through paid means.
Bier described this project as akin to a 'Temu version of subreddits,' hinting at its failure to live up to expectations. Despite this, a few good communities will be allowed to migrate to the revamped group chat experience, which is set to launch as a standalone app called XChat. This new feature promises enhanced functionality with support for public links and up to 350 members per chat.
X isn't giving up on community building altogether. Instead, it's pivoting towards more targeted approaches like Custom Timelines, personalized feeds curated based on user engagement. With a steady stream of new features, X is clearly aiming to revamp its platform to better meet the needs of its users and investors alike.
