Following an investigation into how Paramount’s upcoming Avatar Aang animated feature leaked onto the internet, Singaporean police have arrested a 26-year-old man. The suspect allegedly accessed a server where the film was being held and uploaded it online before its scheduled October 9th premiere on Paramount Plus.
The leak first appeared in an April X post from an anonymous user accusing Nickelodeon of accidentally emailing them the entire movie. While the specific leaker behind that account has not been confirmed, they claimed to be trying to troll due to Paramount’s decision to release the film directly to streaming rather than theatres.
Michaela Jill Murphy, who voiced Toph Beifong in the original show and is now part of the Aang voice cast, urged fans not to engage with the leaks.Animator Julia Schoel criticised the leaker's actions, stating that piracy after release would have been better than leaking a completed film early.
The situation highlights the ongoing struggle between studios trying to protect their intellectual property and the ease with which content can be shared online, even months before its official release date. This incident comes just days after a Japanese man was sentenced for running a website that spoilers new releases.
