At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, BMW took a significant stride towards selling you a color-changing car with its latest concept, the iX3 Flow Edition. This model embeds an E Ink panel into the vehicle’s hood, making it almost ready for mass production.
Beyond the tech gimmick, this approach demonstrates BMW's commitment to practicality and durability. Previous attempts involved custom-sized panels that were impractical for large-scale manufacturing and less robust. The new iX3 Flow Edition, however, integrates E Ink Prism directly into the hood panel, passing stringent quality tests to meet automotive engineering standards.
The color-changing capabilities are limited: eight grayscale animations which can be selected via a button on the dashboard. While not as dynamic as the cars BMW has been teasing for years, this step signals progress towards moving beyond concept status and into everyday use.
For now, it’s still not exactly the car that changes colour at your whim, but with each iteration, we inch closer to a future where our vehicles could communicate more than just their destination. Perhaps one day we'll be driving cars that can express as much as they transport us.
