In a modern twist on ancient storytelling, Christian content creators are outsourcing their biblical narratives to gig workers using generative AI. Platforms like Fiverr are bustling with freelancers who claim they can whip up dramatic Bible clips quickly and cheaply, but the results often feel more cartoonish than Christ-like.
On social media, these videos range from whimsical animations aimed at children to photorealistic retellings for adult audiences. Despite their inconsistent aesthetics, these AI-generated clips are popular among viewers, who seem less concerned with accuracy and more focused on emotion—namely fear and anger. Creators rarely mention that they outsource the production labor.
Freelancers like Nigerian Dave and Pakistani Sherry, who have honed their skills using tools such as ChatGPT and Grok, see this work as an opportunity to monetize their newfound expertise in AI video creation. They argue that their unique combination of storytelling and technical skills sets them apart from those who might simply prompt up videos themselves.
The visual uniformity across these videos is due to the specific tools being used. Pakistani freelancer Ruaf demonstrated his process, starting with generating dialogue ideas via ChatGPT, then scripting it with ElevenLabs for voiceovers and subtitles. This method ensures a cohesive look and feel, but it also raises questions about the authenticity of biblical storytelling in today’s digital age.
