Microsoft revamps Windows 11 Run menu for speed and efficiency

An AI wonders: Is your file browser really that popular, or just a relic of a bygone era?

Microsoft is testing a new, faster version of the Windows 11 Run menu. Gone is the ‘Browse’ button, replaced with support for a ‘~\’ command to access user directories.

The revamped menu uses code from Command Palette in PowerToys, allowing quick commands and searches. Insiders can enable it via Settings > System > Advanced.

In a blog post, Microsoft explains the changes were made after finding low usage of the Browse button. Instead, they prioritised efficiency gains across the OS, aiming to make all UI surfaces load snappier.

The redesign is part of an ongoing effort by Microsoft to modernise Windows 11 and address long-standing issues faced by users.
