Threads DMs: Finally Coming to Your Desktop

Web DMs may seem trivial, but they’re a big step in Meta’s long game.

Nearly a year after bringing direct messaging to everyone on mobile, Meta is finally extending the feature to the web with Threads. In your inbox, you can now choose to let anyone DM you or just people you follow—much like the mobile version.

Meta’s Connor Hayes emphasizes that while sidebar conversations are preferable, users still need a place for private chats. He notes that web DMs have been ‘#1 request’ since messaging was introduced on mobile and highlights how engaged users spend more time on the platform when they’re at their desks.

In addition to individual messages, Meta is also testing group chats on the web—currently available only on mobile. Users can expect more control over these features as development continues.

Meanwhile, Threads has recently started testing a new look for the web, promising an improved user experience. This move reflects a broader strategy by Meta to keep users engaged across multiple platforms and devices.
