Over the last year, Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures have been teasing a new cinematic adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The latest addition to their trailer series offers a glimpse of what promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally charged epic.
Nolan's penchant for grand narratives is well-known; during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he likened the enduring appeal of Homer’s work to modern comic book culture. Nolan even went so far as to compare Homer himself to George Lucas, crediting the ancient poet as a foundational figure in storytelling.
In this adaptation, Charlize Theron takes on the role of Circe, an enchantress who plays a pivotal role in Odysseus’s journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as the legendary Greek king, with Anne Hathaway as his long-suffering wife Penelope and Tom Holland as their son Telemachus.
The cast also includes Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous (one of many suitors vying for Penelope's hand), Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, the Spartan king, and John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Odysseus's faithful servant. With its mix of high emotions and soaring music, The Odyssey is set to captivate audiences with its epic tale.
