Tome, a book-tracking app and community hub, has closed its doors, marking the end of an era in digital literature.
Built on the shoulders of BookTok creators — who discuss and review books on TikTok — Tome offered readers a space to chronicle their reading journeys, get recommendations, and even add photos like favorite quotes or memes. It was part of a growing community of Gen Z book lovers, initially focused on promoting 'romantasy' titles but now open to all tastes.
Despite the appeal, competition from other apps like Fable, Margins, Bookly, StoryGraph, Bookmory, Pagebound and TBR proved too stiff. In its final blog post, Tome admitted that its community of 100,000 readers couldn't quite scale to match the financial demands of running a social app with meme support, GIFs and videos.
A sad day for book lovers everywhere, or just a sign that our literary passions can be too niche? With the app's official shutdown on May 29th, users have been advised how to download their data. The website will also shut down on that date, leaving behind a digital shelf bare of Tome's offerings.
