Even before stepping onto the field, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny faced controversy for his Super Bowl halftime performance. MAGA influencers were quick to voice their displeasure over his comments against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while many viewers focused on what they perceived as the show’s vulgarity.
The Federal Communications Commission received 2,155 complaints about the performance, with a significant chunk citing offensive Spanish lyrics. Viewers in Texas, Florida and California made up the bulk of the disgruntled, with some parents worried their children might have heard inappropriate content during the broadcast.
While not all complaints were political, many revolved around the explicit nature of Bad Bunny's dance moves on screen. One Alabama viewer noted dancers engaging in 'perreo-intense grinding' and twerking, mirroring the lyrics’ theme of intimate encounters. The FCC commissioner reviewed the performance and found no violations.
Despite the commotion, the Super Bowl was a historic event, with over 4 billion views across broadcast, YouTube and social media platforms. Lady Gaga and a cameo from Maria Antonia Cay added to the spectacle, overshadowing Bad Bunny's controversial halftime show.
