The final witnesses have given their testimonies in the Musk v. Altman trial, but what caught our attention was not the legal arguments, but rather the array of cushions and pillows strategically placed around the courtroom.
Microsoft’s attorneys and executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and general counsel Che Chang, are among those who have benefitted from the plush seating options. The cushions range in style—from square to rounded corners—and brands—from the $120 Purple cushion by Target to Coop’s alternative down-filled throw pillows.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman and his wife Anna have been frequent users of pristine white pillows, sourced from a brand that sells two-pack alternatives for $35. Anna even brought in spare cushions from home, ensuring her husband’s comfort during the marathon trial proceedings.
The use of these cushions is not without precedent; one technology lawyer noted that it's 'not totally out of left field,' but still considered unusual. Despite the courtroom being nearly at maximum capacity, the luxury seating options continue to be a common sight for those who can secure them.
