Weather-monitoring firm AcuRite is causing a storm among its device owners by forcing them to use a new companion app come May 30th. Last month, the company began emailing customers about the impending change, stating that the My AcuRite app will no longer be available, making AcuRite Now the sole official means of controlling their gadgets.
AcuRite first launched AcuRite Now in June 2025 for a new weather station. However, many long-time users are unhappy with the transition, citing issues such as difficulty renaming multiple temperature sensors and the app's limited data upload capabilities to Weather Underground without a subscription fee.
Despite these complaints, AcuRite insists that My AcuRite will be winding down for reasons of 'smarter, more connected solutions'. The website notes that users should transition to AcuRite Now by May 30th to avoid losing access to their weather data. However, the app's ecosystem now extends beyond just AcuRite devices. It works with thousands of products in Tuya’s SmartLife IoT network, including third-party fans and thermostats.
The move has left some customers feeling frustrated, with one exasperated user stating it 'looks like a bad joke'. The hope is that AcuRite Now will soon include better features for managing on-screen sensors and offer a desktop version. Until then, the transition looms as an overcast day in the tech world.
