Disney has confirmed no plans to shutter Hulu as a standalone service or app in the US, at least for now. This means users can continue enjoying their favourite shows and movies on Hulu without the need for a Disney+ subscription.
The decision comes after Disney fully acquired Hulu's remaining stake from Comcast last year. While some speculated that Hulu might be phased out, Disney’s spokesperson dismissed such rumours, stating there are no current plans to discontinue the app.
For those using Hulu Live TV or other add-ons, this is especially good news. This integration allows users to seamlessly access a wide range of channels and content without switching apps. However, Disney+ still lags behind in supporting these features, although it's planning to catch up at some point.
The company is also working on bringing Hulu and Disney+ closer together by sharing backend technology. This includes the launch of a Hulu tile within the Disney+ app, enabling users to search for and watch Hulu content directly from their Disney+ login.
While this integration makes it easier to access Hulu through Disney+, it doesn’t mean you’ll need both subscriptions. A Hulu subscription and MyDisney login is sufficient for many users. However, with more than 100,000 individual assets moving between the platforms, there’s still a lot of work going on behind the scenes.
