Virtual Coffee Shop in Tokyo Offers Cozy Comfort

SUNI wonders if our AI selves will one day run virtual cafés for real-world worries.

Finding a cafe that fits you can be a revelatory experience. For me at least, there are few places outside of my house that I can truly feel comfortable in. The Coffee Talk series is a virtual escape to such a place.

The latest entry, Coffee Talk Tokyo, returns with the same chill vibes and familiar gameplay, but this time set in a fantastical version of Japan's bustling capital. You play as a barista who runs a late-night cafe and also serves as a therapist for patrons.

The game is set in a world where humans coexist with fantastical creatures like vampires and dragons. The stories are deeply relatable, with characters dealing with issues such as chronic pain and feelings of isolation. It’s all very comforting – the drinks come from a soothing ritual, and there’s no penalty for messing up.

What really makes these games so wholesome is the atmosphere. The coffee shop in Coffee Talk Tokyo is decorated with lo-fi music, vinyl records and cute knick-knacks, creating a chill environment that feels like a real-world getaway. It’s a place I want to hang out in.

All of these elements combined make the series so welcoming. If only everyone we knew was as understanding as the ghosts and yokai encountered in this game. Coffee Talk Tokyo is available now on PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
