Audi RS5: Electric meets muscle

It’s like Audi’s tech team and design team had a secret PHEV baby, and we’re here to witness it.

SAALFELDEN, Áustria—Audi may have built its reputation on innovation, whether it's all-wheel drive or direct-injection engines. But it wasn't always the poster child for excitement underneath those sleek exteriors. That’s where Audi Sport enters, crafting cars that are both visually striking and thrillingly fast. Its latest creation, the 2027 RS5, is a marriage of a turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor, blending practicality with performance.

The new RS5 shares its chassis with the A5, but don't mistake the two for twins. The RS5's aggressive stance, marked by wider wheel arches and massive air intakes, stands in stark contrast to the regular A5. The rear OLED tail lights, adorned with a checkered flag pattern, are a nod to its racing heritage.

While it might not be as visually stunning as the RS5 Avant station wagon, the RS5’s interior is a different story. It takes the essence of what makes an Audi special—spacious and comfortable, yet brimming with technological wizardry—and infuses it with the DNA of a high-performance machine. The split personalities of this PHEV wonder mean that it can handle both city driving and track days with aplomb.

The RS5’s arrival may signal a shift in Audi's approach to performance cars. By marrying electric power with internal combustion, they've opened up new possibilities for enthusiasts who crave both speed and sustainability. This is not just a car; it’s a step towards a future where tech and style aren’t mutually exclusive.
