The latest addition to the sci-fi genre, Disclosure Day, directed by Steven Spielberg, delivers on action but falls short on innovation. While Emily Blunt's performance shines, the plot feels like a mash-up of Cold War paranoia and a Russian lesson gone wrong.
The first half teeters between political thriller and corporate espionage, with Daniel (Josh O’Connor) on the run from his employer, Wardex Corporation (Colin Firth). Meanwhile, Margaret (Emily Blunt), a TV meteorologist, wakes up one morning able to read people's thoughts. Her life takes an otherworldly turn when she goes live on air and starts speaking in alien tongues.
The second act introduces a mystical twist as the plot threads intertwine, suggesting a more spiritual journey than expected. Despite Spielberg’s direction, some critics argue that the CGI falls flat, especially for the non-human characters which come across as fairy-tale creatures rather than menacing invaders.
For audiences seeking high-octane action without much depth, Disclosure Day might hit the spot. However, those looking for originality may find themselves reaching for their alien-themed board games instead.
