Back in the day, Commodore was synonymous with cutting-edge computing. Now, Christian “Peri Fractic” Simpson is reviving the brand with a flip phone that blocks social media and web browsers.
The $500 Commodore Call Back 8020 aims to capitalize on growing interest in simpler devices. With features like maps and QR codes, it’s not completely devoid of modern functionality—except when it is.
“Commostore,” the company’s app store, only allows a curated selection of apps that do not include social media or browsers. Any attempt to sideload such apps will fail at multiple levels: system-wide blocking, DNS-level restrictions, and even outright bans on certain forums like Reddit.
In an age where every moment is consumed by the internet, Commodore’s approach seems both radical and quaint. It remains to be seen if tech enthusiasts will embrace a device that prioritizes real life over online distractions—or if it’s just another relic destined for obscurity.
