Cold Court, a Philadelphia-based brother-sister duo, has released their debut EP which is a chaotic collage of prog rock, dance punk and hyperpop. The opening track, ‘Nina’, begins with elements reminiscent of mid-2000s dance punks like Franz Ferdinand before transforming into an experimental mess filled with glitches.
‘Burn’ exemplifies the band’s maximalist approach, blending heavy riffs, Daft Punk-like synths and even a rapped bridge. Despite the lack of profound lyrical content, it manages to create a cohesive sound. Not every song goes as big; ‘Cola’ slows down with fewer layers.
The EP’s closer, ‘Light’, leans into prog rock territory with its chopped-up guitars. The band’s approach is clearly maximalist, but the 21-minute length prevents it from becoming overwhelming. It will be interesting to see how they evolve as they grow older.
