Figma has unveiled a new set of features that integrate code directly into its design platform, allowing designers and developers to work more closely than ever before. The update introduces code layers, support for animations and shaders, and the ability to create custom plug-ins using AI.
Yuhki Yamashita, Figma’s chief product officer, explained that these features enable teams to explore ideas more freely without worrying about perfecting production-ready code. 'We hope this feature will produce different behaviors not just with designers but also with engineers and PMs,' he said.
Figma is also enhancing its AI capabilities, enabling users to write text prompts that can generate repeatable skills for the AI assistant. Additionally, the company is integrating a node-based tool called Weavy, allowing users to create workflows directly within Figma. These updates are part of Figma’s broader strategy to make design and development more collaborative.
The new animations, transitions, and 3D transforms mean designers can now integrate these elements seamlessly into their projects without having to switch between apps. AI is also being used to generate shader effects and fills, streamlining the creative process further.
While these tools promise a smoother hand-off between design and development, they raise questions about the future of coding. Will developers still need to write code if Figma’s AI can handle it all? Only time will tell as Figma continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in design and technology.
