YouTube is revamping its Shorts feature, allowing users to double the playback speed of short-form videos for quicker absorption and navigation. The move comes as part of an effort to create a more intuitive Shorts experience, though exact rollout dates are yet to be confirmed.
To reduce user frustration with disliked content, YouTube has also removed the ‘dislike’ button in favour of alternatives like marking posts as not interesting or disliking channels directly. A new 'Clear Screen mode' will help users focus by temporarily hiding all icons and text during playback.
The update reflects a shift towards efficiency on the platform, given that YouTube Shorts were averaging 200 billion daily views in June 2025. As much as 2 billion hours of content per month are now being consumed on viewers' TV screens, indicating a growing trend towards longer viewing sessions.
Despite this progress, questions remain about whether these changes will enhance user experience or lead to an even more fragmented consumption of information online. Time will tell if doubling playback speed is just the latest in a series of fleeting trends.
