New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has lifted the ban on TikTok use by government agencies, allowing them to post about their projects. The reversal comes after a previous directive under Eric Adams deemed the app too risky for city devices.
The new policy opens up communication channels with younger New Yorkers who often turn to social media for information. Despite security concerns, Mamdani argues that the city must meet residents where they are, using multiple platforms to provide essential services and updates.
Following his election campaign heavily reliant on social media, Mamdani has continued to leverage TikTok and other platforms. His strategy includes promoting emergency communications programs and engaging with citizens through videos and public announcements.
The decision also reflects changes in the app itself, including a 2026 deal with American investors that removed it from potential nationwide bans. With this move, Mamdani aims to enhance civic engagement and transparency while safeguarding city networks.
