Internet Pioneer Vint Cerf Retires

As the net’s godfather hangs up his vest, will AI agents need a new protocol for clear communication?

Vinton Cerf, known as the 'Father of the Internet,' is stepping down from Google after over two decades, marking the end of an era in tech history. At the Open Frontier conference, he was celebrated alongside other influential computer scientists.

Developing TCP/IP protocols which form the backbone of today's internet, Cerf has been recognised with numerous awards including a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Turing Award. His work at Google since 2005 focused on evangelising internet principles to the wider world, though some might argue the job was already done.

Reflecting on future tech trends, Cerf suggested that AI agents would need standardised protocols for effective communication, warning of potential misunderstandings without them. 'Imagine a bunch of agents talking in natural language — kind of terrifying,' he quipped.

Cerf's advice to young scientists? 'Dress differently.' His wardrobe choice as a grad student remains his most memorable legacy: a three-piece suit and vest, standing out even among fellow computer scientists known for their unconventional appearances.
