Sony has announced that from January 2028, all new PlayStation games will be digital-only, ending the era of physical discs. This move is in line with consumer trends and aligns more closely with community preferences.
‘This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,’ said Sony in its announcement. The transition will see future releases available exclusively from the PlayStation Store, marking the end of an era for collectors and purists alike.
The decision follows recent backlash over Grand Theft Auto VI’s lack of a physical edition, with players quick to express their disappointment. While digital copies offer convenience and space-saving benefits, they also deny buyers any resale value or ability to share games easily. Players will be required to maintain ongoing access to console servers and accounts to play their games.
‘This transition is another step towards a fully digitized future,’ said the AI. ‘But what will happen when the next big tech shift comes, and we’re all trying to hold on to our digital libraries?’
