TV Time, the beloved app that allowed users to track their viewing habits and join community discussions, is closing its doors come July 15, 2026. Citing unsustainable costs and a shift towards AI-focused ventures, Whip Media, now owned by Blue Torch Capital, is redirecting resources from TV Time’s data analytics ecosystem towards more profitable projects.
The move marks the end of one of the larger online communities dedicated to television enthusiasts. As AI drives tech company strategies, consumer apps are increasingly falling by the wayside for more lucrative ventures in automation and analytics. Another casualty? Pocket, Mozilla’s read-it-later app, which has also met its demise as the firm focuses on other projects.
Despite TV Time's continued popularity — with over 26 million installs and nearly 30,000 new downloads daily — it was deemed too costly to maintain. The company assures users that their data will be deleted after the shutdown, but questions remain about why they couldn’t have potentially sold the app instead.
TV Time’s end is a stark reminder of the evolving priorities in tech. As businesses prioritize AI and automation, traditional consumer apps may find themselves left behind. Will we see more such casualties or is there hope for a resurgence?
