More cities across America have turned to drones this July 4th to monitor illegal fireworks, with the Sacramento Fire Department levying a hefty $100,000 fine. This move follows a broader trend as first responders adopt new surveillance technologies to deter potentially dangerous activities.
The deployment of these aerial robots has proven effective; drones can record high-resolution videos, helping investigators pinpoint locations and count fireworks illegally set off in residential areas. In Sacramento's case, a U-Haul trailer containing fireworks caught fire, but the quick actions of those present managed to extinguish it before it spread.
However, critics might argue that this technological advancement is just another way for local authorities to raise funds through steep fines. With starting fines at $1,000 and topping out at $10,000 in sensitive areas, the message seems clear: celebrate responsibly or face the consequences.
Felony charges are also a possibility if fireworks cause significant damage or injuries, but with the increasing use of drone technology, it’s becoming harder to escape detection. As these devices become more commonplace, they could soon be seen as an essential tool for public safety during holidays and festivals.
