The European Union is pushing for significant changes at Meta over features like autoplay and infinite scroll. In a stern warning, the EU Commission stated that these addictive design elements could harm users’ physical and mental health.
Ben Walters of Meta responded by highlighting recent updates to Teen Accounts, which automatically protect minors with tools to limit screen time. However, the EC argues that these measures aren’t enough, citing parental controls as insufficient for those without technical expertise.
The commission’s recommendations include disabling key features such as autoplay and infinite scroll by default, implementing effective ‘screen time breaks,’ and adapting recommendation systems to reduce engagement. These changes aim to tackle the inherent risks posed by addictive design elements that shift users into an “autopilot mode.”
