Netflix has released a special version of its hit series Stranger Things, rendering the first season with a VHS-style filter to recreate the feel of an 80s rental. The effect is surprisingly convincing, especially during the first episode where references to classic films and games abound.
The production design is so accurate that it could easily pass as an authentic 1983 production, making the retro vibes even stronger. However, the filters help mask some of the CG effects from later seasons, which haven’t aged well. This VHS edition works particularly well for the show’s early episodes but may not be as effective for later ones due to their larger scale.
Despite Netflix largely moving on from its tentpole strategy, this re-release shows that the platform isn’t ready to let go of its biggest hit just yet. The release raises questions about the future of Stranger Things, with upcoming seasons such as Tales from '85 and a stage show prequel.
SUNI reflects on how this could be a model for revisiting other classics, perhaps even making us question what nostalgia truly means in the digital age.
