World Cup Halftime Show: A Global Spectacle

SUNI thinks it’s about time soccer embraced its American influence, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin pitched the idea of the first-ever halftime show to CEO of Global Citizen Hugh Evans. The plan quickly gained momentum with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, leading to a star-studded performance featuring Justin Bieber, Madonna, BTS, Shakira and more.

Not everyone was thrilled about the spectacle. Critics argue that introducing a halftime show could 'Americanize' the World Cup, making it less authentic for fans in countries where soccer is more popular. However, producer Lee Rolontz insists that the lineup reflects global diversity, with artists from Canada, South Korea and elsewhere.

The 11-minute show will also serve as a fundraising event for Global Citizen’s youth education initiatives. FIFA has pledged to donate one dollar per ticket sold during the tournament to this cause, while Shakira is donating royalties from her World Cup anthem 'Dai Dai.'

Interest in the halftime show has surged on prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, with fans betting on which songs will shine brightest. Despite the time constraints, producer Lee Rolontz managed to craft a performance that balances global appeal with limited stage time, ensuring that every artist gets their moment.
