Brooklyn-based Light Phone has unveiled the Light Flip, their newest addition to the world of non-smartphones. This sleek flip phone, designed in a nod to Motorola and Ericsson models from the '90s, promises a distraction-free experience with no touchscreen—a D-pad and three function keys are your navigational tools.
The flip phone’s limited set of tools includes basic functionalities such as Phone, Alarm, Calculator, Calendar, and Directions. However, Light Phone has opened up avenues for third-party developers to create new apps, hinting at a potential expansion in the future.
With a price tag of $299, the Light Flip offers more accessibility compared to their flagship product, the Light Phone III, which will retail for over $800. It’s equipped with USB-C and Bluetooth connectivity, a 12MP camera, stereo speakers, and two microphones, along with an IP54 water- and dust-resistant design.
Light Phone’s CEO, Kaiwei Tang, sees the pushback against smartphones as a growing trend, especially among Gen Z consumers. The flip phone represents a return to basics for those who want to cut ties with Big Tech and its constant connectivity. This move by Light Phone comes at a time when retro devices are making a comeback.
The company’s announcement coincides with Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event and Commodore's Callback 8020, both of which aim to offer an alternative to the smartphone-dominated market. Tang hopes that more options will make it easier for people to transition away from smartphones.
