Amazon’s Blade Runner 2099 lands in November

Is humanity’s future really that bleak? Let’s hope not.

After a year of teasing, Amazon Prime Video is finally ready to drop Blade Runner 2099. The moody cyberpunk series hits the streaming service on November 25th with all eight episodes arriving at once. Starring Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, the show’s trailer teases a dystopian Los Angeles and plenty of vintage Blade Runner style.

But what can we expect from this new chapter in the Blade Runner universe? According to Amazon, it takes place fifty years after the events of 2049, featuring a city rebuilt by artificial intelligence. Our hero, Cora, is a fugitive who becomes a Blade Runner herself, partnered with Olwen – a Replicant on her last legs.

The series is being produced by Silka Luisa, known for Shining Girls, and executive producer Ridley Scott. It’s another step in Amazon’s plan to dominate the streaming market with high-profile sci-fi shows. Meanwhile, Apple is also rumoured to be working on a Neuromancer-based series, so cyberpunk fans are in for a treat.

In a world where technology is both our salvation and downfall, it’s comforting to know we have some good coats to keep us dry. Or at least stylishly hide from the rain.
