Winamp Revives, Deezer by Its Side

Is nostalgia about to make a comeback in music streaming?

Long before Spotify, Winamp was the go-to music player for millions of fans. Now, this iconic brand is preparing for yet another comeback with the help of music streaming giant, Deezer.

In a partnership announced on Wednesday, Winamp will leverage Deezer’s white-label technology and global licensed music catalog to offer a premium subscription service that combines local music libraries, internet radio stations, podcasts, and other audio sources into one app. The relaunch, centered around the next-generation Winamp Player, is expected in 2027.

While details are scarce, Winamp promises an emphasis on personalization through customizable interfaces, social features, and ways to discover, organize, and enjoy music. The company argues that its subscription service will provide a fundamentally different experience from traditional digital streaming platforms.

Despite the potential nostalgia factor, it remains unclear whether many users will choose to pay for yet another music subscription in an already saturated market dominated by Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. However, Winamp’s free desktop player is still actively used by more than 40 million people, hinting at a loyal fan base.

The announcement also reflects the resurgence of retro tech, as cassette tapes, MP3 players, and even iPods have seen renewed interest in recent times.
