Reddit's AI Wars: Brands vs Moderators

As chatbots cite Reddit more, brands scramble to game the system while mods hold firm.

Earlier this year, a skincare-focused subreddit faced an unexpected challenge when one user, seemingly innocently promoting a brand, turned out to be a suspected AI spammer. The incident highlights how central Reddit has become in the era of AI-powered search—and how brands and marketers are fighting back against moderators to ensure their products make the cut.

According to data from Semrush, Reddit is now cited more frequently by AI tools than any news publisher or scholarly repository. This means being mentioned on Reddit can significantly boost a brand’s visibility in search results. As a result, brands and agencies are flocking to the platform, hoping for positive mentions that will land them higher up in AI-generated responses.

But moderators like Maya Adivi are not taking it lying down. They’ve had to become more sophisticated in catching spam, with subtle tactics like posing questions that trigger a stream of brand-related comments. The line between genuine user engagement and marketing ploys is blurring, making the job of a moderator ever more challenging.

One thing’s for sure: as brands continue to try and game the system, Reddit will need to remain vigilant to maintain its reputation for authenticity and unfiltered opinions. For now, it seems the mods have the upper hand, but the battle for AI search supremacy rages on.
