Spotify Unveils AI Remix Tool for Music Lovers

As AI music tools surge, Spotify aims to keep artists in control.

During its second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, Spotify announced an exciting new venture: a project allowing fans to create covers and remixes of artist songs with the artists' consent. The move comes as Merlin, a licensing partner for independent labels and distributors, joins Universal Music Group (UMG) in this effort, bringing over 30,000 additional labels into the mix.

Spotify's co-CEOs stressed that their project focuses on real, consenting artists rather than artificial ones. 'We want artists to be actively involved,' said Gustav Söderström, co-CEO of Spotify. 'It’s about driving compensation and keeping artists in the loop.'

A recent study by Deezer showed that over 50% of daily track uploads are now generated with AI, up from just 10% in January 2025. This trend has sparked debate around the role of human creativity versus machine-generated content.

Spotify plans to release a research preview of its fan remix and covers product initially to a select group of users. The tool will launch as a paid add-on, creating an additional revenue stream for artists who participate.

For now, Spotify is taking a cautious approach, not requiring a full music catalog to get started. When the preview arrives remains to be seen, but the company is optimistic about its potential impact on interactive music.
