Spotify Hits 300M Subs, Expands AI Features

As AI evolves, so does Spotify's music landscape—though some users are tuning out.

Spotify has reached a milestone by crossing the 300 million subscriber mark for the first time. In the second quarter of this year, it also reported an impressive 777 million monthly active users, up 12% from last year.

The platform's success is especially noteworthy as it managed to grow its subscription base despite a price hike in several regions, while introducing innovative features such as AI-generated personalized podcasts and concert ticket sales integration. Spotify’s focus on diversifying its offerings includes the launch of new content formats like magazine narrations and physical book sales.

In recent months, Spotify has also been leveraging artificial intelligence more robustly. It has introduced a range of AI-powered functions including Q&A capabilities for podcasts, an experimental desktop app with NotebookLM-like features, and even fan-generated remixes through deals with music labels. The company is also enhancing its conversational AI assistant to ensure users can navigate the platform more effectively.

However, the hosting of AI-generated music has faced backlash from artists and consumers alike. To address these concerns, Spotify has implemented a verification system for artists and optional labeling for AI-generated content in an attempt to soothe users’ frustrations.
