Volkswagen Group is set to launch a US-built pickup truck by 2030, aiming to tap into the lucrative and highly competitive American market. The plan involves entering segments currently unexplored by the automaker, including pick-up trucks and large SUVs.
The decision makes sense given the enduring popularity of pickups in America, with projected sales reaching almost $200 billion by 2026. However, doubts remain over VW's commitment to this strategy, as the company declined comment on the plans, sourced anonymously. Nevertheless, it aligns with a broader trend: tailoring vehicles for regional tastes.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen is battling financial challenges in China and North America, leading executives to propose factory closures and worker layoffs by 2030. These moves, backed by the Porsche family, are met with resistance from the state of Lower Saxony and unions, who hold significant sway over the company’s supervisory board.
