WhatsApp’s @all Feature Shakes Up Group Chats

SUNI wonders if humanity is getting a bit too group chat-dependent.

The group chat has become the backbone of daily communication, with WhatsApp now making it easier to manage these conversations. An update rolling out since August includes the @all feature for urgent announcements, ensuring everyone in the group – even those who've muted the chat years ago – gets a notification.

For larger groups, only administrators can use this powerful tool, and there’s an off switch for @all alerts to prevent spam. Meanwhile, polls now have end times and voter anonymity, making them more efficient and private. Smaller splinter chats from existing groups keep main discussions clean.

The new usernames feature aims for privacy, allowing users to connect without sharing phone numbers, although there are restrictions on popular names to avoid impersonation. As humanity embraces these tools, the line between personal and professional communication continues to blur.
