Fashionistas of yesteryear will recall the pioneering designer Stephen Sprouse, whose groundbreaking work with glow-in-the-dark materials gave iconic punk style to Blondie’s Debbie Harry. His vibrant creations, which included Day-Glo prints and fluorescent fabrics, not only caught the eye of Andy Warhol but also sparked a preservation challenge for future generations.
A conservator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields is leading efforts to understand the chemical makeup of these phosphorescent pigments. The goal: to keep Sprouse’s legacy bright and vivid for years to come, while learning from his innovative use of DayGlo paints and other fluorescent materials.
The science behind this phenomenon dates back to medieval times when phosphors were first described as minerals that glow in the dark due to their ability to store energy from light exposure. Henri Becquerel’s famous discovery of radioactive decay in 1896 was a pivotal moment, leading to the development of DayGlo pigments and similar materials.
The applications of these materials extend far beyond fashion. They are used in toys, traffic signs, and even cathode-ray tube TVs from the mid-20th century onwards. During World War II, fluorescent fabric panels were critical for US ground troops, while black light paints on Navy aircraft carriers helped planes land at night.
Artists have embraced these materials for their vibrant effects, particularly in psychedelic art and Sprouse’s distinctive style. This preservation effort isn't just about keeping a slice of history alive; it's also about understanding the ongoing impact of innovative chemistry on our world and daily lives.
