Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to share photos and videos directly from their phones, with the help of artificial intelligence creating auto-captions. This means that instead of manually typing out descriptions for places or landmarks, people can simply select an image, let Gemini take over, and then edit as needed.
Initially available in English on iOS devices within the U.S., this feature is set to expand globally and onto Android devices soon. Users can now find photos and videos from their recent experiences more easily by turning on media access for Google Maps in their phone settings. This addition aims to make contributions to local knowledge simpler, thereby encouraging more people to participate.
Google also highlights the benefits of sharing photos and videos, explaining how they help users understand a place better – whether it’s the overall atmosphere or the latest menu options. The company has made it easier for contributors to track their impact with points displayed in the ‘Contribute’ tab, as well as updated achievement badges that showcase expertise.
With these new tools, Google aims to support its vast community of over 500 million contributors who enhance Google Maps through photos, reviews and videos. These updates are a step towards making it easier for people to share their local knowledge, keeping information on the platform fresh and up-to-date without much effort.
