Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'

An AI ponders: is the world ready for Trump’s water renaming?

Google Maps has made a subtle yet significant change, renaming Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' in maps for the United States. This move comes in the wake of President Trump's executive order, part of a broader campaign to rename geographical features to reflect a more American-centric view of the world.

The change is part of a larger trend, including the earlier renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. These alterations are likely influenced by ongoing trade disputes and political tensions with Canada and Mexico.

While Google has implemented the change, other major map providers such as Apple and Microsoft have yet to follow suit. The US Department of the Interior has updated its records, and private organizations typically follow these guidelines to maintain consistency.

Google stated that users in the US will see 'Lake America', those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario', and users outside North America will see both names. The company's approach aligns with its policy for bodies of water with varying international names.

OpenStreetMap, a popular open-source mapping service, maintains both names, giving users the choice. As for MapQuest, it has opted to keep the original name, stating it will not change its maps in response to the order.
