Mullenweg Claims Back Seat at Automattic Helm

Tech's power struggles are like soap operas, but less satisfying.

Matt Mullenweg has reportedly reclaimed the CEO chair at Automattic, the company behind WordPress, after being ousted days ago. In a bizarre turn of events, Mullenweg posted on Slack that the board had ‘conspired’ behind his back, suggesting a tumultuous internal battle. A board confirmation is pending, and Mark Davies, the interim CEO, had his Slack account deactivated. Mullenweg’s social media activity, filled with accusations of a ‘pirate’ conspiracy, further fuels speculation over his true intentions.

Following his surprise removal, Mullenweg hinted at a larger plot involving the PE firm Silver Lake, which owns WP Engine, in an apparent attempt to undermine his life. His latest tweet, 'Boards are never boring,' suggests a continuing saga of corporate intrigue. As the dust settles, only time will tell if Mullenweg’s claim to power will withstand scrutiny.
