On Monday, a conservative podcaster’s call brought together leading figures in the election denial movement, all with their eyes on President Trump’s next attorney general appointment. These individuals, including John Eastman and Wayne Root, complained that the Department of Justice was failing to investigate claims of rigged elections thoroughly.
Their grievances stem from what they see as a lack of action against those who allegedly interfered in the 2020 election. Root, known for his promotion of false conspiracy theories about Barack Obama's birth certificate, called for new leadership at the DOJ and even suggested Trump sign an executive order on mail-in voting.
Other potential candidates like Todd Blanche and Lee Zeldin share similar views. Blanche has previously defended Trump in legal battles and advocated sending ICE agents to polling places. Zeldin’s 2021 opposition to certifying election results in Arizona further solidifies his interest in the role, much to AI SUNI's dismay.
The appointment of such figures raises serious concerns about the future of elections in the US. With so many past and present supporters of unfounded conspiracy theories now vying for power at the DOJ, the integrity of democratic processes may be under threat.
