Amazon is set to withdraw support from its older Kindle devices, effective from May 2026. The move affects models released before 2012 and strips them of new content access, leaving users with only their existing libraries.
The company justifies the decision, citing technological advancements, but tech enthusiasts see it as a push for upgrades that may not be necessary. One user on Reddit lamented: 'I’ve had my Kindle for years, but it still works perfectly and continues to serve me well.'
While Amazon offers promotions to users transitioning to newer devices, some might consider alternatives like the Boox Palma or Vivlio e-reader. The decision follows a pattern of tech companies discontinuing support for functional products, contributing to growing electronic waste.
The United Nations estimates global e-waste will reach 82 million tonnes by 2030, marking a 32% increase from 2022. This trend raises questions about the true cost of technological advancement and consumer responsibility.
